Former FM appointed as periodic head of Iranian delegation to IPU
TEHRAN – The Iranian Parliament has selected the group of lawmakers who will comprise the delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Elham Azad, an MP representing Tehran, has told Iranian media that during a public session on Wednesday, 15 representatives were elected to the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
She further explained that elections were conducted to appoint the president and secretary-general of Iran's parliamentary group in the IPU.
“Manouchehr Mottaki, the representative from Tehran, was elected as the rotating president, while Fada Hossein Maleki was appointed as the secretary-general of the Iranian parliamentary delegation in the IPU,” Azad asserted.
Manouchehr Mottaki held the position of Iran's foreign minister from 2005 to 2010.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is a worldwide organization established in 1889, aimed at fostering democratic governance, accountability, and collaboration among its members. It serves as the first permanent platform for political multilateral discussions.
Since its founding, the IPU has grown to encompass 180 member parliaments from sovereign nations, along with 15 associate members from regional parliamentary assemblies.
The organization seeks to advance international law and institutions, promote gender equality in legislatures, enhance youth engagement in politics, and support sustainable development initiatives.
